It's In The Blood - coming soon!

Coming soon...

It's In the Blood is a wholly unique cinematic movement. At its core a father-son story, the film is a deconstruction of the prototypical "creature feature", incorporating elements of mystical realism and psychological thriller. The producers call it a Psyche-Saga. Lance Henriksen stars in this nightmarish descent into the Wilderness, the very heart of darkness where more than your guilt can eat you alive.

We recently heard from Scooter Downey, writer/producer/director of It's In The Blood who advises that his film is now complete and ready to head to film festivals.

Scooter further advises that he has arranged screenings that are coming up at the Derby City Film Festival (February 18th) at the Eifler theater in Louisville, Kentucky (his hometown). Lance Henriksen will apparently be in attendance and after the show they'll be live streaming a Q@A session with the cast and crew including Scooter himself.

There will be additional screenings at the New Jersey Film Festival (January 28th) and at the upcoming Durango Independent Film Festival in Durango, CO this February.

For news about the movie, stories from the set, Lance adoration, and movie musings you can follow the action on Twitter @inthebloodmovie.

More information is available at the film's website itsinthebloodthemovie.com which recently went live inluding the trailer, pictures etc. There are future plans to include interviews, clips, and outtakes. You can also learn more at the inevitable Facebook page.

Scooter says he is "excited to begin to share the movie with Lance fans, horror movie freaks, and indie cinema connoisseurs".

Lance Henriksen at FedCon

As you may know, Lance Henriksen appeared at FedCon, Europe's largest Star Trek & Sci-Fi convention at the Maritim Hotel, Düsseldorf. The event took place from the 28th April to the 1st of May, 2011. We recently heard from Melanie of www.serieasten.tv who kindly sent us a link to a video which you may like to watch. Serieasten.tv have covered the Sci-Fi convention FedCon for the last 3 years, producing some great video reports about it and this year as Melanie says, was no exception. The video is mostly in German language, but Lance Henriksen and many of the shows guests were speaking in English. Of course you don't need to know the language to get a great feel of the expo and enjoy the great costumes and props.

Check out the video at (and be sure not to miss Lance's hilarious improvisation at the end!):
New York, NY -- February 28, 2011 -- Since 2002, Syfy viewers have experienced mutated sharks, mosquito men, alligators as big as blimps, vengeful demon moths, pterodactyls, werewolves, dragons and really, really big snakes. Plus earthquakes that split the U.S. in half, man-made volcanoes, space storms, tornados made of ice, magnetic meteors and plagues of killer locusts -- every unnatural disaster imaginable.

Now Syfy celebrates its bi-weekly assault on humanity with the premiere of its 200th Saturday Original Movie, Scream of the Banshee, on Saturday, March 26, at 9PM (ET/PT).

In Scream of the Banshee, when a college professor opens a mysterious and ornate box discovered hidden in the tunnels under her university, she and her students hear the horrifying scream of a bloodthirsty Banshee. Everyone who hears the scream is fated to die a strange and terrible death. Now the professor, her daughter and a few of her students must try to stop the Banshee. A production of After Dark Films, Scream of the Banshee stars Lauren Holly (NCIS) and Lance Henriksen (Alien).

Not bad for a human: The Life and Films of Lanc...

Writer Joe Maddrey kindly sent us the following press release concerning actor Lance Henriksen's eagerly awaited biography...

Lance Henriksen will be at the Armageddon Expo in Adelaide, Australia, this coming weekend – meeting fans, signing autographs and talking about his forthcoming autobiography, Not Bad for a Human. The iconic actor has been working with writer Joseph Maddrey for more than a year to make the project a reality. “This thing has taken on a life of its own,” Henriksen says. “It started with me and Joe talking in my living room, and it’s become a labor of love by a community of amazing artists.”

The book will be published in a limited edition by Steve Niles and Alex Lodermeier’s Bloody Pulp Books, and will feature original artwork by Bernie Wrightson, Eric Powell, Tim Bradstreet, Mike Mignola, Bill Sienkiewicz and Tom Mandrake, among others. (The lineup may change.) Niles, a well-known horror writer and creator of the 30 Days of Night series, says, "I had no intention of publishing a bio. It's funny because we started Bloody Pulp as a way to publish something I could sell at cons. Artists always have these really cool sketchbooks they sell, so I wanted to do a writer’s sketchbook of sorts. When I read Lance’s book I was so struck by the honesty of it, and the fact that he talked about the work and not gossip, it made me want to publish it... and here we are. I knew we were onto something when I started calling artists. Every single artist I called said yes to the project straight out. I told Lance that's the power of his work. He has fans everywhere."

Co-author Joseph Maddrey, who wrote and produced the 2009 horror documentary Nightmares in Red, White and Blue, adds, “This book shows all sides of Lance Henriksen. We’ve talked about every one of his movies and written about all of the iconic characters he’s played over the years. On top of that, Lance has been very forthcoming about who he is as a person. He said in the beginning that he didn’t want to hold anything back, and he hasn’t.” Henriksen concludes, “This isn’t just a book about me becoming an actor. It’s a book about all the people I’ve crossed paths with over the years who have helped me to flourish in spite of the chaos of my early life. It’s about this lifelong process of becoming a human being. It’s all in there. Believe me, there’s not going to be a sequel!”

The limited edition will be released in late spring / early summer 2011. Excerpts and updates will be posted on the official website, notbadforahuman.com, and on the publisher’s website, www.bloodypulpbooks.com.
LOS ANGELES (September 15th, 2010) – In celebration of Lance Henriksen’s 70th birthday this year, Director Brett A Hart www.brettahart.com is offering the fans an opportunity to own the picture vehicle for ‘BONE DRY’ www.bonedryfilm.com lovingly named on set as “DUKE” based on John Wayne’s family nickname ‘THE DUKE’ – as he had a ‘no nonsense’ and ‘take no prisoners’ mentality.

After extensive research on off road vehicles, the Producers of ‘BONE DRY’ chose a Suburban as Jimmy’s menacing means of transportation. The theory was that it was a family vehicle, and when Jimmy’s family is unceremoniously taken from him by Eddie, played by Luke Goss, he and the vehicle undergo a metamorphosis. The truck becomes an extension of his hallow self. Co-writers Jeff O’Brien and Brett A Hart wanted it to appear as if Jimmy, the family and vehicle had all died … and were reborn from hell.

Hart says: “I chose grey with rust to be the polar opposite of another menacing vehicular film that inspired ours – ‘DUEL’. The grey also was a nod toward the first film that shocked me into filmmaking ‘JAWS’. In a way DUKE is homage to Bruce the Shark from ‘JAWS’, the menacing semi truck from ‘DUEL’.”

When having DUKE art directed Hart asked for the vehicle to feel like a prison on wheels, hence the mesh in the back. The fan on the dash was a nod towards ‘DUEL’. He had additional buttons inside to give DUKE a ‘Road Warrior’ vibe.

The horns on the side of the vehicle were suggested by Lance Henriksen himself. They served a dual purpose of appearing like a demonic vehicle and allowed for him to bind and tortured ‘Eddie’ - Luke Goss, throughout the desert hunt that takes place due north of the Mojave Desert all the way to the shocking climatic conclusion.

Now the fans of Lance Henriksen, Luke Goss and ‘BONE DRY’ have the chance to own DUKE by bidding on eBay for this fabulous original picture vehicle used on set by Lance Henriksen. In addition a script cover for the movie ‘BONE DRY’ and rearview mirror signed by Lance Henriksen will be included with the car. This is a wonderful piece of memorabilia for any Lance Henriksen fan.

THE TOP 5 MOST HORRIFIC NON-HORROR, ‘BONE DRY’ (2007)
Luke Goss is chased across the desert by a whacked out Lance Henriksen for reasons that are not made clear until the end. Goss is exceptional as the protagonist, and Henriksen is insanely good as the villain. He puts Goss through some nasty stuff (handcuffed naked to a cactus, strapped to the hood of a truck, stuff like that). Just a brilliant flick from start to finish – 411 Mania.com

Three years before reading the script ‘BONE DRY’ Director Brett Hart came up with the idea for the cactus scene. He wanted to do a western thriller and this scene was one of the first ideas he had. In high school Hart scraped his hand across a very small cactus on a teacher’s desk, it was immediately painful and his hand quickly started to swell. It was then he realised, if he really wanted to torture someone, imagine how much more painful it would be to be forced to climb a full grown cactus. Then his mind started thinking - what would be even worse, to be forced to climb a cactus naked.

Hart said “When an incomplete script entitled “Mojave” came to me I knew within the first 20 pages that this would be my debut feature film. A simple premise in epic locations, full of suspenseful opportunities with primarily two characters. I quickly assured co-writer Jeff O’Brien that I’d do everything within my means to bring the story to life. The first two things I suggested were to change the title to ‘BONE DRY’ and to add the viscerally disturbing cactus scene I had conjured up years before.”

To create the cactus was more complicated than the production team had initially imagined. Purchasing a cactus and striping it of its needles is both illegal and physically impossible. After much research the team went to Imagivation in LA to make two cacti, one to climb, the other to cut down. Finding needles that looked real was also complex; several different types had to be imported from China. Since this was our signature sequence in the movie with both Luke Goss and Lance Henriksen, we invested quite a bit of the overall budget into the cactus - as much as creating ‘DUKE’ the truck.

On the day the cactus scene was due to be filmed, Hart totalled his Tahoe in a 4 car/ semi truck collision. Still they kept on moving and started shooting perhaps the most “intense” scene of the movie. Hart said he had a different take on life after that wreck and wasn’t going to let anything stop him from shooting the “hallmark” scene he had envisioned for, by then, 5 years.

As you may know, actor Lance Henriksen appeared at the now somewhat controversial Fan Expo held last month, which is Canada's largest horror expo, attracting an average of 40,000+ fans to the heart of down town Toronto over three days in August. This powerhouse event is an extravaganza of celebrity guests, autograph signings, parties, Q&A sessions, seminars and workshops, and a colossal selection of movies and movie memorabilia, including books, comic books, toys, video games, trading cards, posters, anime, manga, and tons more.

For those of you affected by the overly long queues, alleged poor management and packed out event, you might like to know that the organisers have posted an apology on their website, and have issued a promise to increase the amount of space available at next years event.

According to Wikipedia...

Quote

The 2010 event left thousands of fans standing outside as capacity became an issue, many waiting several hours for re-entry. At one point during Saturday afternoon organizers announced (to a small group by the doors) that they would not be letting anyone else in, including those who had purchased tickets in advance, but the majority of fans remained unaware of this and continued to queue in ignorance until word-of-mouth reached them. Eventually they announced that they would be staying open an extra hour to try to accommodate the lines, though many had waited for more than 2 hours for re-entry.

Attendance reaches facility limit and Toronto Fire Marshal's office halts ticket sales for four hours on Saturday afternoon. Significant backlash from organizers continuing to sell tickets to new patrons while paid attendees locked outside documented by media.

Welcome to the brand new Lance Henriksen Magic website!

As some of you may know, I took over Lance Henriksen Magic a few years back after the original founder Sue who had removed the site due to life's changing pace and opportunities. The site was quickly restored with Sue's support, but had been in need of a major overhaul for quite some time. Since re-opening, the site continued to be popular and news about Lance Henriksen's career continued to be shared with the support of those who work with him and those who admire him.

Following a few months of hard work and some very late nights, I'm pleased to welcome you to the newly overhauled Lance Henriksen Magic which will make it all the more enjoyable and fun to take an interest in the career of the enigmatic Lance Henriksen.

The new site is easier to navigate and use, contains the same classic archive of Lance goodness, but is now a new feature-laden social website where fans can discuss Lance's career, classic roles and his latest projects with like-minded individuals, who appreciate Lance's career and his amazing talent.

I'm thrilled to say that Lance Henriksen Magic will now be brought to you with the kind assistance of Mark Hayden (aka ethsnafu) and Libby! Both Mark and Libby you may already recognise as helping me successfully run This is who we are, my other site dedicated to the fan community and cast and crew of Chris Carter's Millennium, starring Lance Henriksen as criminal profiler Frank Black.

Mark in particular will be helping me to bring you more news concerning Lance Henriksen and his career on a more frequent basis, whilst Libby will be helping oversee the brand new community forums section of the site.

I can confirm that the site and forums will be very familiar to use if you're joining us from TIWWA, as we've licensed the same powerful software that we use at TIWWA but expect some additional features and differences:

A brand new Community Forums - Chat and discuss Lance Henriksen with many more fans beyond the scope of Millennium with full Facebook and Twitter integration (due to be completed in the next few days), Status Updates, Profile Personalisation, Profile Comments, Personal Conversations etc.

A brand new Community Gallery - Share photos and view images of Lance Henriksen from his many roles such as Bishop in Aliens, upload and share photos of convention appearances live from your iPhone or Android mobile...

A brilliant new dedicated Community Videos section - View, share and comment on Vimeo and Youtube hosted video content similar to our gallery featuring Lance related videos, film trailers, video clips, convention videos, fan tribute videos etc. Forum integration - Post a new film trailer for a Lance film and our site will automatically create a new discussion topic for you in the forums!

A brand new Links Manager - Share and discover links to other Lance Henriksen websites, official movie sites etc.

A brand new, extremely powerful but easy to use Content and Articles section which will host our new and existing archive of News Articles, all of the relevant content from the old LHM website and which will allow registered members to rate and add comments directly and easily to news articles!

The Tao of Lance

The Tao of Lance
by Sue Myatt

Having an interest in Taoism and recognising that Lance Henriksen seems to be a particularly decent human being, I thought I would bring the two together in a celebration of the Man! Below you'll find a selection of quotes from the Tao Te Ching alongside pertinent quotes from Mr Henriksen.

Quote

History: Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching is now 25 centuries old. It was written as a handbook for leaders in Ancient China. There, to lead wisely meant to live wisely, to seek personal balance and integration with the cycles of nature. You can learn more about Tao Te Ching at Wikipedia and at www.thetao.info.

"The Tao person never strives to appear great which is how true greatness is achieved" Tao 34

Lance still has to make B movies but he gives his total commitment to each role: "I realized, this is my life, make the most of it. Even if the people around me are bullshitting, I'm not. You do your work as fully as you can, and the ones who hear the sound join in. And some of those B movies turned out pretty good. There were scenes in all of those movies I was never ashamed of." Uncut May 2001

"I appreciate the idea that anybody would think of me as a star. But I'm really not career oriented in the sense that I want to be a star. It's not in me. It's not what I do. In fact, I'm amazed that I've even gotten this far." fango 129

"When people call one thing beautiful,
They see something else as ugly.
By calling one thing good,
Its opposite becomes evil." TAO 2

"That's what I see [Frank Black] as, this incredible ability to stay with it, to not give up, to not judge. If you judge, you run out of energy. It's like a boxer holding his breath when he's throwing a punch, that's what judging is like. He runs out of energy because he's holding his breath. And you get a guy like Frank Black, who doesn't judge so he has that energy to stay in the fray. And that's what i loved about him. I lived that role." Videoscope Winter 2002

"To me rites of passage through life, that's a wonderful, beautiful thing. [Joseph] Campbell didn't sit there and say, 'You're bad, you're good, you're bad.' What he was doing was saying that all men go through this and then we die. And he finally died." Videoscope Winter 2002

"Hold to the Tao within and joy will surely follow" Tao 35

"Looking at pottery from the outside world would never let you understand what it is. It's like a whole organic lifestyle. It has a demand of its own that you cannot defeat. You can't rush anything. You can find ways of cheating and rushing stuff, but when you do, you're cheating yourself out of the experience. Clay has to be dug out of the ground, it has to be cleaned, it has to be mixed, it has to be the right texture in order to make something. When you finally do make it, it has to be dried at a certain rate, then when it finally dries you have to know how to fire it in such a way where it won't explode. Anything you do, beginning with picking up the clay to the end of the firing can alter the outcome. It's literally recording every thought, every move you make. Anybody that lives a lifetime doing pottery, they become masters of a portion of that - not all of it, just a portion of it. It's exquisite, it really is." Videoscope Winter 2002

"I don't like galleries because i think they're just too expensive. It's beyond the pale, it's just ridiculous. They get snobby and they start talking about it in that snobby-ass way." Videoscope Winter 2002

"The Tao person lives fully in every moment" Tao 14

"This isn't a rehearsal for life. This is life." SFX july 2001

Lance on Frank "I can see him having slipped into a level of Chi, or spiritual energy, that grants him a certain amount of serenity and inner peace. Partly I feel this comes from knowing that you're closer to the back door of life than you are to the front. There's a certain serenity that starts to move in on you, and there's a certain reality to it as well. You realise that you don't need to be thinking about building a giant giant building anymore. You'd be quite happy in the lobby, and that's where Frank has been growing towards over the three seasons - there's a phenomenon of serenity coming over him, and with that comes authenticity and wisdom. This is being shown more as he's becoming a mentor to those people around him without talking down to anybody. There's no snoot music - he's just being absolutely authentic with people."

"The wisest person trusts the process, without seeking to control; takes everything as it comes, lives not to achieve or possess but simply to be all he or she can be in harmony with the Tao" Tao 2

"I was disheartened, wasting myself, doing fartcatcher roles, I wasn't investing in the personal things in my life. I wasn't artistic. And I decided 'Fuck this. I'm going to work the way I know I should, but have never had the courage to. If it goes down the toilet, if I don't see it on the screen, that's the end. And it was there. After that I just worked." Uncut May 2001

"Look, there's an element in acting where they hand you a script, and you know everything there is to know about this character. You know what's going to happen at the end of the movie. That in itself gives you a sense of world-weariness. It's like knowing your own death, every time. There must also be a world-weariness in me that people pick up on." Lance adds. "I'm nothing like that - I'm really not, man! But there are things that we see in each other that we never talk about. And they must see that in my soul."

Interview by Nick Hasted in Uncut, May 2001.

"Hold to these principles: seek simplicity, grasp the essential, overcome selfishness and wasteful desires" Tao 19

"After a while people have to take responsibility for their own actions for what they do in this world. I'll take responsibility for what I do. But political correctness and V chips and telling me to wear a styrofoam helmet in the bath tub 'cos I might slip and fall doesn't do it for me. I love the feeling that I am making my own choices and living by them. Leave some room for the human condition. We're not perfect and never will be." E@H

"I will not sit back and wait for somebody else's call to live. That's a big mistake. If I've got a movie to do and I've got a month to get ready for it, I do it organically. So it's very important for me to have a good sense of time, time being used well and time just lived. I'm not waiting to live any more of my life." Cult Times

"The Tao person embraces the one and lives in peace by its pattern, do not dwell on your ego and you will discover your soul. Avoid prideful acts and your work will endure, if you do not compete no-one on earth will compete against you. Follow the ancient wisdom 'Yield and Overcome', true peace is achieved by centering and blending with life." Tao 22

Lance sees Frank Black's development as part of a "cosmic journey. There's no time for him to hold onto anything except for his beliefs from one moment to the next. He has to believe that his core is basically right on."

I've always known from the beginning of my acting career that you only get an acting job if you've got something to learn about it. If you don't do it well, you'll be condemned to doing the same role over and over and over again. If you do it mediocre you'll have to do it again. Once you've done the role really well, you don't have to repeat it , you don't have to go back there."
Dreamwatch Magazine, #44

"The best people are like water, they benefit all things and do not compete with them. They settle in low places, one with nature, one with Tao" Tao 8

"We called her Sage because my wife and I always run up in the hills and there's a lot of wild sage up there. When she was born, I thought about what made me happiest, and sage is one of those things. So we agreed to name her Sage." fango #191

"I've never tried to have a career where I've calculated [everything]. It's been more like a farm where you get up in the morning and you step out and you smell the air and you get out there and you try to grow something." Cult Times

"The thing is... I don't really look at the things that have come out, not in any kind of longing way because for me movies are an absolute adventure. They had their adventure, but mine are still happening and still going so I have no longings. I've never had the fantasy that I wish I had been married to Marilyn Monroe for instance. I have no longings otherwise I would be called a bride at every wedding and a corpse at every funeral; and I have some wonderful projects coming up so I'm real happy. As long as these movies don't take me away from my pottery and that's the truth. " Sideshow Collectibles transcript 2005

"I hold three treasurers close to my heart: the first is love, the next simplicity, the third, overcoming ego" Tao 67

"Everybody needs labour. There's rest in labour, there's pride in labour. You've gotta be able to do something even if its just digging a garden, but you gotta do it everyday when you're not doing the thing that makes you a living. Now acting is certainly an art form, but pottery for me is spiritual." Cult Times

"Now in between [movies] I'm in my pottery - god, my great obsession -it heals. Labor is meditation for me."

"Tao people know themselves and make no display. Accept themselves and are not arrogant" Tao 72

"I have a great wife and daughter and dogs and a life - and I make pottery. I have things outside of [my work] that keep my feet on the ground. I'll never buy into [fame]." E@H

After his big cinematic break in Dog Day Afternoon, Charles Durning warned Lance prophetically: "You'll never work 'till you're older 'cause you look kind of goofy." Film Threat June 95

"The way to greater light leads through the darkness. Going ahead feels like falling back. The even path seems rugged and hilly, the highest power a yielding valley" Tao 41

"I'm a little bit like a boxer. You put the opponent in front of me and I'll deal with it ... What we do, acting, is a combination of a love affair and sport. I'd try anything and I'll go for it. I'm not afraid of anything" Cult Times

"Acting is still tough for me on a certain level. Every role for me is like going back to zero. I have to decide what I'm going to do, or if I can even act anymore. It's rough when you're constantly challenging yourself to do better and better work, rather than merely go through the motions." Fango #129

"There's so much lack of rules about things that directly affect our lives in major ways, like Bill Gates, the attitudes that allowed mad cow disease to affect humans, and corporate nationalism. These are the things we have to fight against and they are the fights we'll be faced with more and more in the next millennium." TV Zone 105

"But tilting at windmills is not a bad thing because, even as Cervantes said, you can either get thrown into the mud or up into the stars. It's the risk we really all should be taking. It's what he meant by that. If we don't start living by those things I think we're gonna end up in a lot of trouble as a planet. We have been - we've had wars. Corporate nationalism to me is a little bit like what would have happened if Hitler had won. It's scary stuff. It's totalitarianism in a different from, under a different flavour. They're just spoon feeding it to you in a different way." Dreamwatch Magazine, #44

"When a conventional person hears about Tao he breaks into loud laughter. If there were no laughter it would not be Tao" Tao 41

Lance took a 1973 military truck and restored it to sell his wares and painted 'Screaming Red Ass Pottery' down the side! "Pottery just takes itself so seriously, I like to be more blasphemous about it. I don't wanna be one of the old ladies that are making teacups. And that truck, I sell pottery right off the back of it, I get to meet people and talk to them about what they like." Cult Times

"All life embodies Yin and embraces Yang, through their union achieving harmony" Tao 42

"There's no money to be made in helping a young director out of the gate. But in honesty that's never been an issue with me." Shivers

"Follow the Tao and live in harmony.
"Every movie I make changes me, makes me a different person, forces me to grow and think." Shivers

[on the meaning of life] I guess the only thing I can say about that is that I don't want to be Peter Pan - I know it's all going to be over eventually, so I'm going to try to enjoy every minute of my life." Dreamwatch #123
