Harlan
Knowles (Lance Henriksen), is the owner and CEO of a top biotech research company.
He
is determined to find his daughter Tara (Erica Parker) after the plane she was
on went down over the snowy and mountainous solitude of the Pacific
Northwest.The
only clue to its whereabouts were co-ordinates received before the plane's ELT
stopped functioning. Search parties were sent into the area specified by the
ELT. They scoured the mountainsides for weeks without finding a trace of the
aircraft. The search was then officially called off and the crash victims considered
dead.
Now the snow has melted and unable to let the matter rest, Knowles has decided to assemble an expedition party of his own to head into the woods and look for the plane wreck himself. None of them suspect that there is more awaiting the team than they could imagine and not all of them will make it back alive.
Knowles
hires Winston Burg (Phil Granger), a world-renowned tracker, guide and author
of several books on hunting and tracking, to lead the team. Burg has criss-crossed
the globe. Knowles knows Winston from the club he is a member of. Winston is
gruff and touchy, full of himself and his credentials. Local guide and wilderness
expert, Clayton Tyne (Russell Ferrier) also joins the team. Clayton supplies
them with his boat and the gear to go into the Mountains. He might seem a little
slow and superstitious; Clayton is a simple man and says things straight out
and to the point even if you may not like what you hear.
We soon find that there is another factor in Knowles' quest. A prototype of a genetic analysis device called the Huxley, which his company developed at the cost of untold millions. After the crash, Knowles' insurance company agreed to pay out a policy. Only Knowles is aware that if his prototype machine is a success his struggling company will be saved. This, the insurance company is highly skeptical of. They agree only to pay out for loss of life and property. This amount will not come close to covering the money Knowles has already spent on the Huxley. He and his company will be finished if he cannot recover the device.
Marla
Lawson (Andrea Roth) is an insurance rep who has volunteered to go out on the
expedition because she knew that Harlan Knowles himself was going out. What
better way to get her hands on one of the most eligible bachelors in the world?
We also find out that Marla is aware of the Huxley and wants to locate the device
for herself. Beautiful and ruthless, Marla is a woman to be reckoned with. Nikki
Adams (Mary Mancini) is the second woman on the expedition. Ex-military, she
is a crash analyst and forensic investigator hired by the insurance company.
She is the antithesis of Marla. Strong, honest, intelligent and pretty but not
a head turner. She comes equipped with forensic equipment and other tools.
Plazz (Jeremy Radick) known only by his nickname, is the techie boy. The science whiz that Knowles has brought along. Plazz has worked on the prototype with its inventor. He is not used to being in the proximity of real people and is more comfortable with a computer and his online buddies. What lies ahead for Plazz is a learning experience about people and the unknown.
As the team boards Clayton's boat to venture into the wilderness Plazz gets the feeling someone is watching them from the forest. Plazz looks at the water admiring the beauty of nature. This is something Plazz is a stranger to. Staring at his reflection he then notices what seems to be a man's shape standing on a ridge above staring down at them. He turns to look up, only to find there is nothing there. Who could be tracking the team? Is it someone trying to find the Huxley first? They gather their gear, head inland and pitch camp.
We get to know these characters more during their conversation around the campfire that night. Marla, bored by their company and frustrated in the lack of attention Harlan is showing her, decides to call it a night. Back in her tent Marla makes herself at home as much as she can. As she settles in something attacks her tent! A person or animal drags the tent with Marla in it across the forest floor. She screams and alerts everyone from the fireside. They leap up only to see the tent disappearing into the brush. Guns are grabbed and they give chase. The team pursues into the forest firing shots as they go. They soon find Marla in shock, the tent ripped. Whatever it was, is now gone. Clayton surmises that it was a young Grizzly bear.
As the journey continues, the weather changes. Trying to get out of the rain they find a dry cave to settle into one night. In the cave they find drawings done in animal blood on the cave walls. Is this a warning? Or is it one of the survivors of the plane crash left alone in the woods too long? In the cave Harlan recovers an item from the plane, his daughters' necklace. A clue she is still alive? They must be getting closer to the crash site and hopefully some survivors. During the night in the cave Nikki has nightmares. At one point she half awakens to someone standing over the group in the cave. Blinking her eyes she looks again and the image disappears. Nikki dismisses it as a bad dream.
As they make their way deeper into the wilderness the tension mounts. They reach the co-ordinates where the plane wreck was expected to be and find that it is gone, moved by some unknown force. Following their guide Clayton, they soon find their questions answered but quickly discover that those answers only lead to a more disturbing mystery. The plane and its crew have been torn to shreds. The group tries to piece together clues about what could be responsible for the carnage. As they deal with the threat they must confront, the members of the team also contend with each other. With the help of the Huxley prototype they discover they are facing a menace whose very existence is one of the world's greatest mysteries and the only people left to rescue are themselves.
